The Center for the Humanities shares in mourning Susan Stanford Friedman, Virginia Woolf Professor Emerita of English and Gender and Women’s Studies and Hilldale Professor Emerita of Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a longtime friend of the Center. A scholar and leader in literary, cultural, and feminist studies, Professor Friedman was one of the founding members of the Women’s Studies program at UW-Madison in 1975—just one point of pride in her dazzling array of awards, publications, and accomplishments. She built and improved institutions, touched the careers and lives of many students and colleagues, and was a devoted parent and grandparent. Susan worked closely with the Center for the Humanities and its staff throughout its history, especially during her time as director of the Institute for Research in the Humanities (2007-2017). Ardent academic feminist, tremendous scholar, extraordinary teacher and mentor, and treasured friend, Susan will be deeply missed.
