Younghill Kang (1898-1972), who emigrated to the United States from Korea in young adulthood, is best known as the first Asian-American novelist. This talk explores his lesser-known fascination with poetry and poetry translation, as unexpected entry points into his understanding of what it means to switch between cultures and languages as a creative writer.

Marta Figlerowicz is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and English at Yale University. She is the author of two books, Flat Protagonists and Spaces of Feeling, as well as over a hundred articles, essays, and reviews in peer-reviewed and popular venues. This talk is excerpted from her current book project, It Must Be Possible: Modernism and the Problem of Trans-Cultural Knowledge.
