A Discussion with Drs. John Dunne and David Yaden
Join the Borghesi-Mellon Psychedelic Past, Presents, and Futures workshop group for an illuminating conversation between Drs. John Dunne and David Yaden as they discuss the mystical experience, phenomenology, and how it relates to psychedelic and transformational experiences. In the psychedelic clinical space, the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ) as well as other analysis tools like microphenomenology are used to quantify peak transformational experiences. Dunne and Yaden will discuss the intricacies of mystical experiences and how they can be studied and measured. They will also explore the relationship between phenomenology and mystical experiences, examining how our subjective experiences shape our understanding of reality and are used in determining therapeutic outcomes.
Dunne is a distinguished professor and department Chair in the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures, as well as the Distinguished Chair in Contemplative Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work focuses on Buddhist philosophy and contemplative practice, especially in dialog with Cognitive Science and Psychology. In addition to serving as a faculty member for the Center for Healthy Minds, he is a Fellow of the Mind and Life Institute and an academic adviser for the Rangjung Yeshe Institute.
Yaden, is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. He has recently been named as the award recipient of an endowed professorship through The Roland R. Griffiths, PH.D. Professorship Fund In Psychedelic Research On Secular Spirituality And Well-Being. As leading expert on mystical and transformational experiences, his current research focuses on the behavioral and subjective effects of classic psychedelics as well as their treatment potential.
Together, Dunne and Yaden will provide a thought-provoking and insightful conversation that promises to expand our understanding of consciousness and the human experience especially as it relates to non-ordinary states of consciousness.
