How to Do Things with Texts: Iterative Uses of an Indian Text

In the Battle Book of the Sanskrit Ramayana, the monkey warrior Hanuman goes on a hunt for healing herbs that are required to revive fallen soldiers. This episode is one of the epic's most celebrated, retold, and iconographically represented acts. Reflecting on the episode and some of its retellings, this talk considers what Hanuman’s journey might indicate about the nature of Hindu divinity and devotion, and the occasion of classical medicine in the present-day.
